NATURE MEETS CREATIVITY ON THE SHORES OF LAKE MICHIGAN

New Work, Process, Public ArtAnne Leuck

You might not know that I’ve rowed crew on the Chicago River’s infamous Bubbly Creek for the last couple of years…but that’s a story for another day. The story here is that back in August I was on Lake Shore Drive heading to row but traffic was so bad that I wasn’t going to make it…so, being next to my beloved Lake Michigan, I exited and headed back north to Montrose Beach (my longtime favorite paddle boarding and kayaking beach). The first day there was not a soul around, I decided to draw in the sand! I started by writing a message “I missed rowing” with a sad face to send to my crew mates, but then I thought…let’s make some art! The last time I made art in the sand it was a relief sculpture, over 20 years ago, it felt good to playfully experiment again. For inquiring minds I used a pen (with the cap on!) to draw then went back in with my fingers to deepen the lines.

A few weeks later I found myself turning around again, when I found out rowing was canceled for Indigenous Peoples’ Day. I decided to go much larger this time, it was quite a workout, I was aching all over the next day, but had a total blast. This sand drawing was most likely 3 times my height and I deepened all the lines an additional 2 times. I didn’t know until I got home and looked at the photos (outside of glaring sunlight) how much easier it was to see it without all the extra work and deepening of the lines. Regardless, it felt amazing and I hope to do more of this temporary earth art in the future.

Santa Margherita on the way back to Rapallo from Portofino

I took so many photos, and also wanted to share some videos that I made on the trip…so here is part 2. Though the photos are cross between the whole week. A reminder if you did not read my first post it is HERE and this is about my JUNE 2022 Sketch Journaling Travel Teaching Trip to Italy with the Blue Walk, and its lovely proprietors, Jeannette and Suzy.

Arriving in Lake Como on a very windy day, ready to teach a class…

RECAP Part I: Italy Sketchbook Teaching Trip

MANAROLA, ITALY - CINQUE TERRE

BUONGIORNO! I'll be the first to admit it, I’m generally a happy homebody - but my recent Sketch Journaling Travel Teaching Trip to Italy with the Blue Walk, and its lovely proprietors, Jeannette and Suzy, changed all of that for me. They took care of all the details, which made enjoying the trip so easy - the group was small enough (14 in all) for us to easily get to know one another and scheduling flexible enough for everyone to have flexible time apart or meet up for meals, extra creative time and exploring! Each day was filled with wondrous adventures, amazing sights, taste and experiences...so much for my students and I to capture in our sketchbooks.

APERTIVO IN RAPALLO …ITALY’S MUCH CLASSIER VERSION OF HAPPY HOUR ;)

This smattering of photos are from Milan, Rapallo, Portofino, 3 towns in Cinque Terre: Monterosso, Vernazza and Manarola - as well as: Varenna, Lenno, and Bellagio on Lake Como. When you travel you become aware of how easy it is to become stagnant in our lives and limit our perceptions of what is available to us. I’ve come back to the US so grateful for this experience, and with a more open-hearted vision of the possibilities for my life and future.

Creativity Helped Me Escape Severe Depression...

Business, Press & Published ..., Sketchbook, Process, My Candy Colored WorldAnne Leuck2 Comments

Chicago-based artist Anne Leuck calls herself a child of the ’70s, an era known for its bold sense of color and graphics. Grew up in Sparta, a small, idyllic, midwestern town in Wisconsin, Anne got intimately attached to the delights of color at home, where creativity spurred in little things since both her parents had a taste for art. Today, this 54-year-old visual storyteller experiments with traditional painting and drawing, as well as digital media, journaling, and ceramics. She has licensed her designs for stationery and home décor products, and her artwork has appeared on billboards, movies, books, TV, and magazines.

But there’s more to her story! In the prime of her career, Anne sunk into clinical depression. While the world got brighter and more joyful with her art, she suffered in silence. In a candid chat with Real Life Heroes - By Manvi, she discusses her life, artistic, and mental health journey.

Warning: You might need tissues. I was humbled and grateful to have had my work and message captured so beautifully by Enero J. Ray and Chad Fedler of Touchvision. This was edited down from a 40 minute interview with me as well as a visit from my client Claire and her pups Medi and Tula.

Warning: You might need tissues (according to the folks on Facebook who watched it already). I am humbled and grateful to have had my work and message captured so beautifully by Enero J. Ray and Chad Fedler of Touchvision. This was edited down from a 40 minute interview with me as well as a visit from my client Claire and her pups Medi and Tula. We also took a field trip over to the new Urban Pooch Canine Training Center to get some footage of the new mural I designed. What a gift to have this tribute to my pups Izzy and Alice who were such an integral part of growing my art business and inspiring me to get involved with addressing the Homeless Pet situation so prevalent in our society.

Day 2 with the sketchbook video:

Process, Sketchbook, VideoAnne LeuckComment

Monday...day two, experimenting with video capture! Sorry, I'm having trouble centering this, and clearly the video I took of actually writing that lovely quote by Tyler Knott Gregson didn't work out...foiled again!

I had the extraordinary experience of paddling on the lake without another soul in site, in the pouring rain. It was magical and a little crazy. Don’t worry, there was no lightening, Mom!

I rigged up this tripod (rock/candle/brick from my old house) for my phone/camera (which I took the photo with, so you can’t see it!) Unfortunately the 12 minutes of sketching I did were cropped too small. Trial by error…that’s my method!

Look what I made! I've been wanting to try this with one of my dogs since seeing something similar done with holiday deer, on Pinterest, a month or so back. I created this guy very quickly on my way out the other night. The next morning I found it collapsed, so I bent the legs and suddenly had feet...even better (: I love working with cardboard and this idea has huge potential for my work...stay tuned!

PS...check out the other cool images of 'Cardboard Art' I've found on Pinterest.

2013 Fields Project Part 4: Process

Part 4 from the Fields Project:  PROCESS

Unlike my plein air compatriots, I work via sketches and photographs. Mostly driving around the first few days of the residency and then setting up my outdoor studio at Castle Rock State Park. This year, I only spent a short time up there due to weather and ticks. I spent two afternoons painting in one of the enormous storage sheds at the Bocker Farm...me and the morning doves, they didn't really appreciate my prescence but they graciously spared my artwork their droppings!

No, this cow was not this tall, but I couldn't resist making this comical rendition.

My work was more abstract than usual, this year. I was fascinated by the patterns of the driveways at the farms and the simple shapes of things.
