Creativity Helped Me Escape Severe Depression...

Business, Press & Published ..., Sketchbook, Process, My Candy Colored WorldAnne Leuck2 Comments

Chicago-based artist Anne Leuck calls herself a child of the ’70s, an era known for its bold sense of color and graphics. Grew up in Sparta, a small, idyllic, midwestern town in Wisconsin, Anne got intimately attached to the delights of color at home, where creativity spurred in little things since both her parents had a taste for art. Today, this 54-year-old visual storyteller experiments with traditional painting and drawing, as well as digital media, journaling, and ceramics. She has licensed her designs for stationery and home décor products, and her artwork has appeared on billboards, movies, books, TV, and magazines.

But there’s more to her story! In the prime of her career, Anne sunk into clinical depression. While the world got brighter and more joyful with her art, she suffered in silence. In a candid chat with Real Life Heroes - By Manvi, she discusses her life, artistic, and mental health journey.

Ode to Karl WIrsum

Anne Leuck

I think I first stumbled on the art of Karl Wirsum at the Phyllis Kind Gallery in the 90's. It's always really resonated with me, I loved seeing the Hairy Who show at the Art Institute in 2018 and was thrilled to see his work on glass and plexi there since I've been experimenting with it for awhile now. What a legacy he leaves behind, I've read so many lovely sentiments from students and folks who new him, not too mention such a prolific, vibrant body of work...AND, sketchbooks! I learned today how his sketchbooks were a large part of his process. So I use mine that way as well but more to document my life and lives lost...learning, adventures, and more. Please look him up if you don't know of his work. #ripkarlwirsum

I am honored to have the Protest Posters I created and carried in the 2017 and 2018 Chicago Women’s Marches included in the show Well Behaved Women: 100 Years of Suffragist Art at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City, Indiana. It runs through October 23. This show is wonderfully curated by Janet Bloch, these photos are from the socially distanced opening on July 3rd and only feature a handful of the fabulous works - shown here: mine and Cathi Schwalbe's fab posters from a multitude of protests, also shown below: Melissa Blount telling us about her poignant work, and powerful photos from Whitney Bradshaw 's Outcry installation. If you visit, which I highly encourage you to do, if you are in the area or need an escape from Chicago for a socially distanced afternoon, you can also pick up some of my cards or a sketchbook portfolios in the giftshop...

BLACK LIVES MATTER * Justice for George Floyd * #anneimation

#blacklivesmatter #justiceforgeorgefloyd ♡ Seems there is no right thing I can say besides my heart aches for all people of color and the pain and discontent reverberating around our country due to our deeply embedded systemic racism. My Advice from the article : The best way to create a home that reflects your unique personal style is to only buy artwork that you LOVE! Do not worry about it ‘matching your sofa’; your home decor can be built around that crazy painting that lights you up when you look at it or the one that brings you a sense of serene calm. You can tie your space together compositionally by purchasing a pillow, a throw or painting a wall that showcases common color elements in your art pieces, perhaps getting an architectural lamp or plant that mimics a line, if it is a sculpture. Lastly, from time to time, move pieces around, you will see them, anew! – Anne Leuck Studio
